Martin Lee 'Marty' 'Marc' Abel

Marty was the son of Eugene Odell and Evelyn Nadine neé Weathers Abel, brother of Janet, Carolyn and Sandy and father of Jess Marcus, Kalon Lynne, Nicole Leigh, Jamie Elizabeth, Joshua Aaron, Austin Layne, Connor M, Taylor Ashley, Skylar Dare, and Colton.
Marty played football for Oklahoma State University and lettered in 1974.
Dr Abel was the Founder and Medical Director of Triad Eye Medical Clinic in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Serving Green County for over 20 years, Triad was also home to the first bladeless cataract surgery in the state of Oklahoma. Dr. Abel also performed Oklahoma's first LASIK surgery in 1996, and performed over 25,000 of them since then. The creators of the VISIX laser voted him a top performing refractive surgeon in the United States. In addition to his clinical work at Triad, Dr Abel also had a teaching position at the Oklahoma State University and Oklahoma College of Medicine and Surgery as an ophthalmology professor.

It was in 9th grade that I met Marty. He was new to Hadley and the coaches were always looking for height to add to the basketball team. Marty was quite a physical specimen, very strong and quite smart. I had heard stories about the football drills that the football players performed. One involved the Oklahoma Drill, I believe was its name. It involved going one on one with each player lining up and trying to smash the opposing player. Marty was lined up against David Stough. The result of the collision was two big strong football players laying on their backs semi unconscious. The coaches loved that sort of thing. On the basketball court Marty was a duck out of water. But after the basketball season there was a gym class wrestling tournament and each gym class winner, in their weight class, moved on to the finals, which were held at night at the school. Well, it was pay back time for Marty. Unfortunately, I made the finals in my weight class and I got to wrestle Marty. Watching him warm up I immediately wished that he was wrestling either Stan Putman or David Stough in the heavy weight class, but he was in my weight class. So, guess who had the quickest pin of the night? That's right, it was Marty.....ha!

I had my cataracts removed here in us this year. I was visiting with a young doctor and mentioned I knew Marty. The next thing I knew, there were four other young doctors in the room with us, wanting to know all about Marty. He is a legend in the "Eye" world. I drive by Triad every day as I go to run my dogs. Marty had several smaller offices. I remember at one time, he had a helicopter for transportation to his other offices as he performed surgeries everywhere. Marty lived life to the fullest, and it was apparent to me he enjoyed most teaching others so they could help others. Thanks, Marty, for giving back.
