James Brent DeLand was born on October 21, 1952 to Robert Earnest and Billie Berle (née Robbins) DeLand.  He graduated from Wichita West and received his Bachelors degree in Business from Wichita State. He worked in collections for many years. He split his time between Lake of the Ozarks and Overland Park KS. He has one surviving son, Dustin DeLand.
