Curtis Leo Stanford, a dedicated public servant and cherished family member, passed away on July 23, 2024, at the age of 71. Born on June 8, 1953, Curtis was the son of Wesley C. Stanford and the late Dorothy Faye (Smith) Stanford. He is survived by his sister, Valerie (Stanford) Blackwood.
Curtis grew up in Wichita, Kansas, where he graduated from Wichita West High School in 1971, earning recognition for his athleticism and passion for football. He pursued higher education with fervor, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kansas State University followed by a Master of Arts degree from Wichita State University.
In 1976, Curtis embarked on a significant chapter of his life when he moved to Washington D.C. to work as a staff member for Congressman Dan Glickman. His career in public service continued as he joined the Committee for Science, Space, and Technology. Curtis took great pride in his contributions to pivotal projects, including the Space Shuttle, Doppler Radar, the Air Force WC-130 hurricane hunter aircraft, and indoor emergency lighting for aircraft. His final role in Washington D.C. was as the Congressional Liaison to the Weather Service. In each of his positions in Washington, D.C. he was well respected and admired from colleagues and peers alike.
Curtis retired to Naples, Florida, in 2001, where he enjoyed respite from his career journey. His legacy is marked by his unwavering commitment to his work and his enduring impact on those around him. Curtis will be remembered for his dedication, integrity, and the positive influence he had on both his professional and personal circles.
A Celebration of Life will be held to honor Curtis’s life and contributions at 3215 Gulfshore Blvd N #3, Naples, FL 34103 on Sunday August 4th at 4PM.
